Whats on My Easel - Jan 2022

Hello Friends,
Wow, hard to believe the first month of the year is almost over. And I bet you’re wondering what’s on my easel!
Well, it’s a “BIG ROCK”, a seriously big chunk of quartzite. I know it sounds boring but it really isn’t.
While most people know that the name Okotoks is derived from the Blackfoot name “ Okatok” which means rock. What might not be as well known is that the rock formation was originally part of the Jasper mountain range and was transported via glaciers to its current location 7 km west of Okotoks on highway 7. It is the world’s largest known glacial erratic weighing in at 16,500 metric tons. That is incredible!
Why Paint a big rock, that’s a good question.
In my mind it is a noteworthy land mark that represents not only the origins of our town, but a place of beauty.
I really want people to see and experience the sheer size and magnificence of this beautiful glacial erratic. With the onset of a gorgeous sunset dropping just behind the Rockies as a reminder of where it came from and how it came to be here.
